People frequently ask why we collect donations of pull tabs at the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House. First, it is a recycling program that earns money to support the House. Second, it is a grassroots marketing campaign designed to raise awareness about the House and the families who we serve.
Pull tabs are donated to the House in every container type of container imaginable, ranging from a tiny snack sized bag to 80 pound boxes. People even mail them to us from around the country. Last year we raised more than $1,500 through this program. People donate pull tabs to us that would have been recycled or thrown away, and we put them to good use. There is a company that provides us with large collection bins and picks up them up when they are full. After they weigh the tabs, they send us a check for the going rate of aluminum.
People are also curious about why we do not want the entire can donated. Getting cans donated would take up too much space and could attract critters that we do not want to invite to our House. Collection canisters are available at the House and can be picked up from the House from 9:00am until 9:00pm. Pull tabs may also be dropped off during that time. If you fill out a donation form, we are happy to send you a letter of thanks. We appreciate all donations of pull tabs for the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House.
